During WWII, the death camp at Treblinka had an escape, causing the Commandant at a similar camp in Sobibor to vow that his camp would never experience the same thing. But those who were its captives, the Jewish laborers that had been spared from the ovens, knew that they were on borrowed time and that their only hope was to escape... the only question was how to do it. However, because the Germans would kill an equal number of others whenever a group attempted to escape, the captives knew that if ever an escape was tried, all 600 prisoners in the camp would have to be included... logistically precluding any ideas about tunnels or sneak breakouts. Indeed, to have such a mass escape could only mean that the Ukrainian guards and Germain officers would have to be killed, which many of the Jews felt simply reduced themselves to no better than their captors... thus making it a struggle of conscience. After telling Maigret she overheard a plot to kill 'the countess' club singer Arlette is strangled and soon afterwards the body of an elderly, reclusive countess is also discovered. Maigret believes a third person was present when Arlette was killed and is anxious to trace a man called Oscar, whose name Arlette cried out in her sleep. Meanwhile young rent boy Philippe, who shared the countess's drug addiction, n survives an attempt on his life but is too scared to help the police. Maigret finds out that both the dead women once lived at a Nice hotel, where the countess's husband died in odd circumstances and where Oscar also worked. In the 1920s Harry Price, a medium and exposer of fake clairvoyants, is approached on behalf of rising MP Edward Goodwin, whose young wife Grace's odd behaviour causes her to believe that their house is haunted and she is being made to obey the commands of ghosts. Goodwin is sceptical, feeling that Grace's problem is psychological, but he will not have her committed - partly so as not to harm his political career - and asks Harry to move in following mysterious, sinister writing on a floor. Helped by sensible housemaid Sarah and opportunistic journalist Vernon Harry researches the house's history, learning it was previously a workhouse where a young boy, Grace's possible ghost, was murdered.
